My Vape Leaks? How to Fix a Leaky Vape
Have you ever had a leaky vaporizer? The following scenario is then familiar to you. It’s the first day at his new job. You confidently walk around the office in that new suit that gives off an air of success.
But something is not quite right. Your new partners seem to be smiling or awkwardly avoiding your gaze. You rush to the bathroom to regain your senses, and then you see it: the nasty wet stain on your pants. The Curse of the Leaking Vaporizer!
Don’t worry, most of us have experienced it at some point and there are many ways around this complicated situation.
Our top 5 ways to fix a leaky vaporizer are:
1. Make sure you fill your vaporizer tank correctly
2. Check that your vaporizer tank is tight.
3. Try replacing the coil or vaporizer pod
4. Make sure your voltage/wattage is at the correct levels
5. Check your tank to make sure it is free of damage
1. Make sure you fill your vaporizer tank correctly
By far the most common reason for a leaky vaporizer is not filling the tank properly. Rule 101: Never overfill the tank and always refer to the manual to find out how to fill it properly.
There should always be an air pocket at the top to create a vacuum. This will prevent the e-liquid from leaking out of your tank’s airflow holes.
For tanks that are filled from the top, be sure to avoid pouring liquid through the hollow tube that runs through the center of the tank.
This is called a fireplace and it is definitely not for e-liquid! It will just pop out of your vape pen from the bottom and create a big mess. Be careful during this procedure and make sure you have followed all the necessary steps.
Make your vape crackle or sputter by following our guide. You will be ordered in no time!
2. Check that your vaporizer tank is tight.
This should be your second port of call when evaluating why your vaporizer is leaking. If you haven’t bolted your tank tight enough, the e-liquid will seep out of the gaskets.
Make sure the top and bottom of the tank are screwed on tight. But not too much! Screwing them in too tightly may cause cross threading and you may not be able to disassemble it again.
Also, it may not just be the tank that needs careful attention. Make sure your atomizer is fully screwed in and the press fit coils are pushed in all the way. An unadjusted coil will mean there will be no seal and will most likely cause a leak.
3. Try replacing the coil or vaporizer pod
One of the other reasons your vaporizer could be leaking is because your coil is old. Often before the dreaded dry hit occurs, there could be other signs that your vape coil is ready to pack.
You should try this first if your tank has been leaking for a while. Coils will need to be replaced from time to time (depending on what type of coil you have), we cover this in more detail in our guide on when to change your vaping coils.
4. Make sure your voltage/wattage is at the correct levels
Yes, I know that all the information on watts, volts, and ohms can be overwhelming but, for most of our purposes, it is actually simpler than it sounds. If you have a vaporizer with the ability to adjust the voltage, it is important to ensure that its wattage is set in the optimal range of the coil you have inserted.
First, check your atomizer. Most likely, it has the optimal range printed on it, so your best option is to go somewhere in between. For example, if it says 5W-15W, choose around 10.
Setting the setting too high could end up burning your wick and shortening the life of your coil.
Conversely, if you end up setting the wattage too low for your coil, there won’t be enough power to produce steam.
This means that it will draw too hard, which can cause the Nicotine vape juice to leak from the bottom of the tank. Remember, moderation is key!
5. Check your tank to make sure it is free of damage
Perhaps the rarest of odds, although it can happen. And for those of us prone to dropping our Nicotine vape juice, more may have happened than we’d like to admit!
Check for cracks in the plastic or glass shell of your tank. Sometimes it only takes a small amount for a leak to occur, so watch carefully.
Also, when you remove the bottom or top of your vaporizer tank, you will see little rubber seals. These are called O-rings. They are responsible for preventing leaks between the components in your tank.
